Etsy Craft Night + South Street Seaport

Crafting keeps me sane. The therapeutic rhythmic in-and-out of a thread being sewn takes me to a deep place, reminding me of an elderly woman in her rocking chair lost in her own thoughts.

Etsy Labs (a summer fave!) had a Craft Night on July 28 at South Street Seaport in NYC. Sponsored by Hancock Fabrics, the meetup was a chance to connect with fellow crafters and snag some arts goodies.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with name tags and cantaloupe. My name is Kelly. I ❤ boys.

Etsy furnished the event with cafeteria style seating (which happened to be very conducive to stranger-to-stranger conversation), scissors, felt, embroidery rounds, needles and thread. To honor the event’s location, Hancock Fabrics dished out a very cute and appropriate naval print fabric. My end result?

Attention Shoppers! Fashion’s Night Out NYC 2010

Last year was amazing, and this year Fashion’s Night Out is at it again!

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT 2010:

FNO will return to NYC in New York on Friday, September 10, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Last year, in NYC alone, more than 800 participating stores across the five boroughs feted thousands of shoppers who supported the fashion and retail industries—we expect this year’s event to be even bigger and better, with a lot of fun surprises!

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT ON A GLOBAL LEVEL:

In the United States, FNO is a collaboration between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. Around the world, countries led by at least fifteen international Vogue editions, will once again participate in the festivities. Nations including England, China, Japan, India, Italy, France, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Russia, Greece, and Taiwan— Turkey), each country will celebrate Fashion’s Night Out on one night between Sept 7 and Sept 16, 2010.

CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS:

A percentage of the sales from the Fashion’s Night Out will be donated to The Change Network and NYC AID Fund.

CBS SPECIAL:

The making of Fashion’s Night Out will be the subject of an hour-long, prime-time special on CBS, Tuesday, September 14, at 10 p.m. EST. Cameras will follow celebrities, designers, editors, and retailers as they prepare for year two of FNO, taking viewers behind the scenes during months of intense planning and tracking the night itself as it unfolds across the globe. This special will also look beyond the glamour to the real-life implications at stake, focusing on the individuals working in all parts of the industry, from salespeople to design staff, for whom the vibrancy of the fashion business is a question of economic survival.

Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) is an unprecedented global initiative created to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, and boost the industry’s economy. In the United States, the program is a collaboration between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. On September 10, 2010, Fashion’s Night Out will return to New York City and launch in cities nationwide to put the fun back in shopping, with designer appearances, live windows, celebrity guests, and other special events. RESULTS FROM FNO 2009 INCLUDE:

According to an independent study by ShopperTrak:

–       Foot traffic in stores jumped by 50% that night.

NYC & Company conducted a survey:

–       75 percent of them bought something that night.

–       Two-thirds of those consumers visited stores they have never been to before.

–       61% ventured out of their comfort zones, going to neighborhoods outside of their work and living areas.

For the first annual Fashion’s Night Out 2009, Melissa and I had the chance to make our rounds all over NYC. From men vogueing in the window of Opening Ceremony to the signature Tiffany Blue carpet strewn on Fifth Avenue, Fashion’s Night Out 2009 was a mindblowing experience. Let’s hope this year delivers as much as the first!

Mad Men Mania! – Season 4 Premiere Party

Holding a degree in Advertising, it’s only natural that I am nuts about Mad Men. Mad Men Mania is taking over New York City right now (I spotted lots of commuters in their best Betty and Joan garb!), with a sponsored season premiere screening taking place in Times Square right now. The doors of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are open for business!

Season four of the hit AMC original drama, Mad Men, premieres this Sunday evening at 10pm.   You can “go mad” and be a part of a premiere screening event in NYC’s Time Square! Scheduled with a Mad Men costume contest, trivia, and the exclusive screening.

Before Mad Men premiered three seasons ago in 2007, I don’t think I knew where exactly AMC could be found between ESPN and VH1. But since the mad men of Sterling Cooper have caught the attention of viewers and critics alike they’ve won five Golden Globes, nine Emmy awards, countless other awards and my full attention every Sunday night.

It has been acclaimed for its great rendition of life in 1960s and its visual style. It’s also great to watch and see our favorite commercial items from today make their way into the series, such as Kodak, Clearasil face wash, Hilton hotels, and many others.  Though Mad Men is set in a fictional advertising agency, the characters deal with hardcore dilemmas: Don’s constant adultery which led to Betty’s petition divorce and departure to Reno, Peggy’s child out of wedlock, Pete’s annoying desire for upward mobility, Salvatore’s “closet” homosexuality, “invisible” racism throughout the series, and many other circumstances that are mirrored very well by the great writers of Mad Men. A Week of Foody Heaven !

As if I don’t already have a million reasons why I absolutely LOVE living in New York City, I now have a million and one! Its New York Restaurant week (yeeeah!). Starting July 12th, there are two weeks to catch great deals for lunch and dinner from some of NYC’s newest, hottest, and most recognized restaurants! I will try my best to indulge in Summer Restaurant week (my restaurant, Mercer Kitchen, is participating so I’ll be busy!). So GO, EAT, ENJOY! Tell us where you ate, what you had, and send in pics!

Stirrings Naked Bartender Competition

There’s nothing better than a late night and a couple of Cosmos with your girlfriends. Actually, there may just be…

Stirrings hosted a Naked Bartender Competition at the Time Warner Center. The competitors, all hoping to become real-time bartenders, wore aprons and shorts (ok so they weren’t FULLY naked, c’mon we’re classy here!) and mixed their way into the hearts of passers-by.

Present was a panel of no-nonsense judges, including Celia Chen, Founder & Editor of Notes on a Party, and Joaquin Simo, a bartender at the ultra-chic New York City lounge, whittled down the competition. The six Naked Bartender hopefuls were scored on their creative and classic cocktail creation, a judges’ challenging Q&A and on-the-spot consumer questions.

Carlo Romero, a California transplant, eventually won. His favorite cocktail, “The Big Apple”, is a refreshing mix of vodka, Stirrings Appletini, and Stirrings Ginger Ale.

“I’m extremely excited to tour the country on behalf of Stirrings as the Naked Bartender,” said Carlo Romero.  “My lifestyle is all about serving the best natural ingredients so I’m excited to encourage my fans to embrace the all-natural lifestyle as well.”

“The Big Apple” sounds like something we may have to try this summer. Enjoy the flicks, they are quite delicious!

MASQUE Out & About: Cosmopolitan Magazine Summer Splash 2010

Catching up on posting our fabulous Summer 2010, the ladies of MASQUE Magazine chopped it up at the Cosmo Summer Splash 2010, sponsored by Cosmopolitan Magazine.

The event took place at Nikki Beach Midtown and hosted free massages, food, ice cream (yes! Starbucks Java Chip is a new fave!), and cocktails provided by Absolut rounded out the night. A fabulous event to grab the girls and go to, this annual event was so much fun!
