7 Apr

It’s that time of year again (it only happens twice)…. Spring Spa Week!! It’s going on from April 13th – 19th, 2009.

Spa Week is a marketing tool for spas in major cities to obtain new clients, with hopes they will love the services enough to continue visiting and paying full price for treatments. It is also a way for new spa goers and frequent luxury-seekers to feel fabulous and relaxed without breaking the bank.

Choose from the list of spas located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, Hudson Valley, Long Island and Staten Island… your options are endless. Whether the service you seek is for embarrassing hair removal, pilates sessions, a bird-poop facial (at  Shizuka New York Day Spa for those interested), or the ever-popular relaxing deep tissue massage,  there is a spa that will accommodate your need for only $50/treatment.

Another “extra” for this season’s spa week is that most spas arer EXTENDING their special $50 treatments throughout the month of April! What a treat! 🙂

Make your appointment soon, as this is a popular event and appointments go fast.

Their father, an attorney, was defending a Black man who was accused of raping a white women. Their town and neighbors all had “screw faces” about his choice to take the case and people started calling the Finch Family “nigger-lovers”…

Well the women of BAAD! Ass Women is having an open discussion tonight, in the Bronx, about the use of the “n” word in the banned novel by Harper Lee, in harmony with Women’s History Month.

March: Women’s History Month

13 Mar

In honor of Women’s History, librarians blogging @ NYPL will present a monthlong series of posts highlighting the many amazing women they’ve discovered through the print and online resources of The New York Public Library.

You can expect to hear from library staff covering a range of areas of expertise: Irish-American writers, women over fifty who have made a difference in the world, the three waves of feminism as recorded in the Manuscripts & Archives Division, the unexpected lives of women (was Julia Child really a spy?) as well as the quietly unassuming but thoroughly compelling histories held in the Milstein Division, and more. And in celebration of the women of today, the NYPL has partnered with the New York City Commission on Women’s Issues in their launch of the NYC Women’s Resource Network. The NYC Women’s Resource Network “is a free, user-friendly database of over 1,000 nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies that work to advance and benefit women and families in New York City.”

These organizations provide a range of services and information on topics like aging, childcare, domestic violence, employment and job training, health, immigration, LGBT, financial education, veterans, and more.

This March, we celebrate the dual roles libraries play in our lives: as a way to preserve and curate women’s history, and as community information providers, giving women of the present resources to improve their lives and set a path for the future.
