The Nuyorican: An Oldie but Goodie

nuyorican-poets-cafe-mast-logoIf you like hip-hop, poetry and live music, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe may be your new favorite place.  There are a lot of talented individuals floating around New York City, and they are all jam packed in this little cafe in the most creative part of town aka the East Village.  This bomb spot is the longest running poetry showcase in the City, so there is much history rooted on that stage.    Of course I had heard of the Nuyorican, but never had to chance to visit.  Last night, I was invited to the open mic/ poetry jam which occurs the first Wednesday of every month.  The doors open at 9:30 with a 12 dollar cover.  The drinks were a decent price (just beer, soda or water), and the door man was selling some crack-like banana pudding, a definite must try!!! I got there a little after 10 pm and it was standing room only but to tell the truth I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I was too busy enjoying the vibes to worry about not sitting down.  I have to say, that I was blown away by the great atmosphere presented, the melodic grooves and the movers and shakers up on the stage.  There was a wide array of MC’s, dancers, singers, poets and just plain ol’ expressionists so everyone could relate.  I give the Nuyorican “two snaps” !

The Nuyorican has different showcases everyday and I invite all to visit the website and find upcoming events.
